Babe Ruth Biography
George Herman Ruth Jr. - Babe Ruth - was born in his grandfather's house at 216 Emory Street, Baltimore, Maryland, on February 6th, 1895. Babe was one of eight children but only he and his sister, Mamie, survived infancy.
During his early years Babe was left on his own most of the time while his parents worked long hours in a tavern. When he was seven years old Babe's father took him to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys (a reformatory and orphanage) and turned over custody of his son to the Catholic missionaries who ran the school.Babe Ruth Biography
Babe learned to play baseball at St. Mary's. Around age 15 he tried pitching - immediately excelled at it - and from that point on alternated between catcher and pitcher for the varsity team.
In 1914 Jack Dunn, owner and manager of the Baltimore Orioles, visited the school and saw George Ruth Jr. play for the first time. He spotted Babe's talent and signed him to a contract with the Baltimore Orioles for $100 a month. Babe Ruth was 19 years old.
When the older players saw George Ruth Jr., they referred to him as “Jack’s newest “BABE”. |
